Drum roll please...

...it's my first completed quilt top of 2011!

quilt top complete

Yep, it's Gman's black and red quilt.  Not sure of a name for it.  Suggestions on a postcard please.

Next step is to quilt it...not sure how yet though ;-)

  1. This looks really great. It feels so good to finish a project doesn't it?

  2. Cute decisions for the border and adding the third color. I like the way you did that - and the way the background is with different blacks. Nice job! Must feel great to be ready for the quilting stage now!

  3. Are those log cabin blocks? Not usually something that takes my fancy, but these ones look great. In that tradition I'd suggest a name like 'Home fires,' which is a nod to the tradition of a red centre in a log cabin block and to me connotes love and caring. I haven't read the history of this quilt so forgive me if this is a total mismatch with your design intent.

Well done on a finish so early in the year.

  4. Thanks for your comments, ladies. Yep, Jan & June it certainly does feel good to finish a project. That's why I think I am going to concentrate on making smaller quilts this year lol.

Mosaicthinking - yep, that's a log cabin in the centre. I like your choice of name - this quilt is for my son so love and caring is a lovely thought ;-)

  6. If it was me I'd go for it big time and do Fantabulous Freehand Fans.

On the other hand, if you want to get it done quickly then it will have to be by machine.

  7. I really like the way you added the liberated border and the greens-great ideas, thinking outside the box.
I did hand quilted fans on a recent liberated lap quilt and I love them. I found they went quickly--I made patterns from card stock, traced them a few rows at a time with a soap sliver. I traced quickly, I didn't worry if the lines weren't perfect or if they disappeared since it was a liberated quilt.

  8. What a gorgeous quilt. Very liberated yet one that will be handed down through the centuries with people wondering why you threw that green in there. I absolutely love it. As for the quilting, perhaps a meandered, echoed very loose horse shoe designs? They'd be a soft design and you could freely insert them as you machine stitch. Check out the quilting done on the flower quilt on sewmuchknitting.blogspot . Something similiar to that. O you could meander a variety of stars itermittantly like I did on my Alien Invasion quilt. Just a thought or two. Love your quilt, it's beautiful. Jane
